Lady Gaga: Social networking scandal about to ruffle industry
Speaker Alan Grayerr warned about the abuse of social networking sites at the Los Angeles Social Network Club meeting a couple weeks back. He was specifically referring to businesses and entertainers using false Facebook and Twitter accounts to add to their following.
This morning, it was revealed that Lady Gaga has several empty Facebook and Twitter followers.
All this creates a problem for the “Queen of Social Networks,” because her marketing team often touts the fact that Lady Gaga has a record amount of Facebook and Twitter followers. But many of these followers appear to be imaginary people.
On Facebook,
some Mother Monster’s followers include such names as Jay Palms, John Doden, Louis Oriole (who happens to have a very similar name to a character in a Madonna video), and Alejandro Stefani. These names have no profile information, no pictures, or any other information. This doesn’t necessarily mean the names were created by Lady Gaga herself; it could be the creation of the same marketing people that decided to sell her album for 99 cents so it could compete in the marketplace. It could possibly be the work of Lady Gaga’s obsessed “little monster” fans.
It gets worse; some of these so-called Lady Gaga followers are with empty Twitter accounts as well. LouisOriole doesn’t seem to have any activity on his account with the exception of following Lady Gaga. In fact, Lady Gaga appears to have more empty Twitter followers than Facebook followers. What is happening here?
“Lady Gaga is dying in both hype and record sales,” says Los Angeles industry analyst Paul Mueller. “
Having so many Facebook and Twitter followers is her one last claim to fame, so perhaps this was the only way to make it look like she is still popular.” However, Mr. Mueller doesn’t think Lady Gaga would be stupid enough to get caught doing this. “This is probably the work of her obsessed fans, but even I can’t be 100 percent sure. “
