Joe McElderry: Dropped by Syco, signed by Universal

It was all looking rather bleak for Joe McElderry when he was announced as part of the Popstar to Operastar line up, but the 20-year-old has fallen on his feet and secured a new record deal. The former X Factor winner, who beat Olly Murs in the final two years ago, has been picked up by Universal.
Joe was dropped by Simon Cowell’s Syco record label earlier this year, just 18 months after winning the series and less than a year after releasing his debut album.
However it was revealed this week that, after winning Popstar to Operastar on Sunday, Joe has signed with Decca Records for a new album due out in August. “We nurture our artists,” Decca said, seemingly in a dig against Cowell and Sony.
Joe's not really cool enough to release cool music, and at the same time he's not really enough of an old fogey to fit with Decca. They'll undoubtedly push him to release some ridiculous album of jazz/blues standards, or some such nonsense.
He isn't in the scene right now. He doesn't strike the public as a contemporary popstar nor does he have the qualities many other artists have. He has had his time to shine, yet other artists turned out brighter and more appealing.
What genre will they put him in? The relevant stuff we here in the UK today won't work alongside Joe's voice. I think it is time to call it a day.
