Justifying the usage of slurs (Let's Chat)
N******
F******
W**back
The recent Chris Brown thread has inspired this discussion. We often talk about slurs that are hurtful to certain groups of people (Race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.)
Is it okay to use the words? Are the people who the slur reference to entitled to use the word freely? For example: Gay males calling each other F*gs or blacks calling others N*gga/N**ger. What is your stance on the matter of how slurs are used today, meaning the context in which they are used and by who?

I admit I use the word "***" or "******" a lot on this forum and on tinychat. But that's my internet lingo....you won't dare here me say it from my mouth.
Now the N word.
I don't use it. It don't think it should be used. I don't respect it. Call me a N***** and we will have a problem. That is not my name so don't call me that. I hear my uncles throwing that word across the room like a ball. I've don't even think I've said that word. I don't like the supposedly acceptable version "n*gga". It's a mess....and I have to agree with white people on this one. If they can't say it neither should we.

I totally agree with you! I can't help but feel like a hypocrite though! Bitch, hoe, ****, ****, etc. are demeaning slurs for females, but we still joke around and call each other those names. When a guy uses any of those names no matter if they're serious or joking, we immediately take offense. "Don't call me a hoe." "I am not anyone's bitch sir!" "EXCUSE ME? I am not your *****!"
It's a habit of ours that we use jokingly, but I can't help but feel like a hypocrite for feeling this way, yet feeling so oppose to ANYONE (black/white) using the N-word.

Then I'm sure the n word is part of someone else's "internet lingo." If you're going to say one thing shouldn't be used then don't use others.
As for my opinion, I don't care. I don't use any of those words, but other people can do whatever they want.

I use none of these words. I would never condone spreading hateful, discriminatory language no matter what context it's used in.

I know, but it's implanted in the way I type. Plus seeing words used on the internet is completely different then hearing them in person, hearing them in person makes you feel completely different than just reading it. I've never said "***" or "******" and I don't plan on using those words.

Slurs are thrown around by nearly everyone.
Slurs to white people, Black people, Homosexuals and women.
I will admit i do say '***', 'bitch', '****' and some other things that aren't exactly something people should say but i rarely say them in real life. Around here or ANYWHERE in america today the kids are saying 'thats gay' and they do not mean it as in a gay person being a bad thing but more so just gay being a bad situation or something. It isn't right and sort of annoys me too but it's just what they say nowadays. I'd never use N***** at all. Internet or real life because i wouldn't want someone saying any of that to anyone around me.
You can sit up here all day and say 'slurs' are bad to use but in reality we all use or have used before. Women still use slurs that were used against them. Black people do it, Gay people and white people do it.

Those same words that people use as everyday lingo have been used to dehumanized entire groups of people for years.
So no, I don't use those words and don't see the point of using them.

Just because everybody does it doesn't necessarily mean it's right.

I know exactly what you mean. It's funny because a week or too ago me and some females where actually discussing this. If I was to ever say to a female friend "what's up bitch" I'm getting slapped. But if a female says "what's up bitch" it's used in a friendly manner. I think personally...offensive lingo is used in a friendly way by all types of people. Like blacks say N*****, white people might say cracker, or gays might use ***. In society today as long as you're the one the word is aimed towards, it's acceptable to say it. It's still not right though. But hell, half the **** people do nowadays isn't right or considered right.

Then change if you want or just don't if you don't want to. We're human; we're always capable of changing our habits and behavior with effort. Just don't complain if someone else uses the n word or something else you don't like as their Internet lingo because (s)he'll just use the same excuses.

Nope. Just because you've used them (and probably still use them) doesn't mean we all do. You're just playing the "everyone does it" card to justify your use of it. And not all of us are black or white (or gay, but that's a stretch on ATRL lol).

I wouldnt say anything on here or anywhere else on the internet that I wouldnt say in real life.
That being said, I am known for dropping the mini f-bomb too much. But I whoop bitches asses if they use the N word. **** people who say that. I stopped dating someone I really liked because they said it ONCE.

I use non of them really. I use to say "that's gay" and the n word a lot when I was in high school, but I've changed.
I also don't tolerate ****** being used near me, even if not directed to me, and I'll tell it to your face if you do.

I have pretty much used all of the above, but I have never used it on the particular group.
Like I have never called a gay person "***" or a black person "N*****" or a any girl "C***"
I usually just use them with my brother or really close friends when we are joking or I'm pissed at one of them.

Fifty years ago, it was okay to refer to all blacks as "******s" and one hundred years ago it was okay to routinely rape your wife.
But since everyone was doing I guess its alright.

I'm unbothered by seeing the N word. Hell Kisuke uses it all the time. Like I stated before, seeing it typed is completely different then hearing it. If I hear it....I feel a different way than if I see it typed.
