"King B"
Quote:
A few weeks ago, Beyoncé released the cover art for her new single, “Best Thing I Never Had” featuring a new promo photo. In the picture, she stands in a bathroom looking at herself while writing “King B” on the mirror. It was apparent that it was all a part of her ‘Girls Run The World’ campaign and theme of ‘female empowerment’ that she has been pushing with the new album, however her use of “King B” has sparked mixed reactions.
Video director Vashtie tweeted, “It’s so entertaining that broads are referring to themselves as ‘KING…’ now. it’s cute…”. Beyoncé fans were on attack, but it was hard to tell whether the tweet was meant to be a direct jab at Beyoncé, as Vashtie has also referred to herself as ‘King Vashtie” on the NY party scene for years.
Streetz, a writer for the popular site SingleBlackMale.org, weighed in on his thoughts of Beyonce’s “King” reference by saying,
"As a male, my feeling on Beyoncé’s King reference is indifferent, as I see it as purely a marketing gimmick; I didn’t take offense, nor was I taken aback. I think it's an interesting concept and it’s part of her women empowerment groove she’s been on this go around."
While Dr. J added,
"I’m always confused by Beyoncé these days because it’s obvious that she’s got some gender issues going on. I can’t say it’s limited to just her. But I wonder why she feels the need to be a King and not a Queen. (I hope it has nothing to do with Lil’ Kim). I just think there’s a “feminist” movement going on out of her camp, and it’s awkward. I don’t think men or women have ever had problems with Beyoncé, I don’t think we’ve ever said anything about her success or fame was attributed to nothing but talent and hardwork. I think she’s trying to break down gender roles, but the question is what led her to this?"
The issue of gender roles is definitely not limited to just Beyoncé; as popularity continues to grow with bringing transgendered issues to light. (i.e. Cher’s son Chaz, people questioning Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s choice to dress their 5-year-old daughter like a boy). Besides, Beyoncé reversing gender roles is not completely new.
In her video for the song, "Suga Mama" off of the “B’Day” LP, she talks about reversing the sugar daddy role while sporting a men’s styled suit and smoking a cigar. In the song, “Upgrade U,” she sings about helping her man build up his bank account, splitting the bill and taking care of home while impersonating Jay-Z in the video that accompanied the song. “If I Were A Boy” is another video in which Beyoncé takes on the male role and even grabbed her crotch during a performance of the song during last year’s Grammy Awards.
Yes, calling herself “King” is an empowerment thing, but it may also be a bold statement to let people know that she’s more than just a pop diva dominating over her female counterparts. She reigns over the men too.

Why do we need to psychoanalyze her nickname?

Because people keep asking why we're calling her King B, why she called herself King B, and why she doesn't call herself Queen B. In other words, to make it clear for those who just don't get it...

No, I mean why do some of the people commenting on the King B nickname have to psychoanalyze it? I'm an analyzer, too, but Dr. J took analyzing to a level beyond psychoanalysis. She just likes to be called a King and not a Queen and the Best Thing I Never Had cover had that written in a mirror to show that she wants her lover, her King, to be the reflection of her. Why make it complicated?

I didn't read it cause I'm lazy as ****, but I'm assuming it has to do with her nickname. If it does, then why? It's a nickname. People use 'em cause they remind people of them. Deal.

Ah, gotcha! Lol. I have no idea... "Dr. J" is probably one of those psychology degree-holders who thinks everything has to do with an internal identity struggle, when in reality he has no idea what he's talking about and is taking things far outside their context...

The last two paragraphs are the most important part, especially the very last one I put in bold.

Probably. Most seem to be like that. I had a friend one time who told their psychiatrist that they had a dream about a pig which the psychiatrist attributed to issues with her father.

Omg...
To be honest, I think Beyoncé referring to herself as "King B" makes people who are less confident about themselves feel uneasy... especially men who aren't comfortable with their masculinity (aka. possibly Dr. J)

Only insecure males would have a problem with this. It does not need to be that over-analyzed

Ahh, alright. It just seems obvious to me that it has to do with Beyonce's feminist image and that Queen and King titles are equivalent to each other, since males and females are. Didn't think an article would need to go over it in-depth.

This. It's not that serious. Quite honestly, it's not serious at all.

People have been calling Jay Alexander on ANTM "Ms. Jay" for years, but it's scandalous when Bey calls herself "King B"? And it's just a nickname written on a mirror for God's sake

I said that couple of days ago;
Quote:
But doesn't she mean by this picture that her perfect lover would be the exact reflection of her? (Personality, etc...)
"King B" is written in the mirror reflecting her image, as if the mirror is her lover, which she calls, "King B".

Besides, Nicki Minaj has also proclaimed herself as King Nicki in the Moment 4 Life video and song.

I personally would prefer Queen B, as it sounds better and holds the same meaning, imo. But eh, whatever.
