It's not neccessarily exploitation. First of all, it is entirely her creation and therefore she is perfectly entitled to do whatever she wants with the world she has created and secondly the fans quite simply want more from the franchise.
It's following the pattern of the Lord of the Rings, hugely successful books with a cult following, hugely successful movies and video games, and now an MMORPG not to mention the theme park, merchandise etc. It's unusual to get a book that is not just a story but an entire world, people want to immerse themselves in that and thats cool.
