Ive always wondered why music artists that are based in the U.S tend to go international more than stars from other countries. Is there a reason for this?

I love music from around the world but i feel like i have no access to it.

U.S. pop culture is maybe our biggest export, and because of that dominant presence most Americans don't feel the need to search out music (or movies or TV shows) from other countries.

I dunno why you'd feel like you have no access to international music, though. Thanks to the internet you have more immediate access to it than any generation before. You just have to search it out.

Exactly. It seems like, more & more, though, that people are beginning to take interest in international music and pop culture. Most all of my friends listen to K-pop, J-pop, and European music, and they seem to be more frequently reported on blogs than they used to be.

The US isn't very accepting of other things, unfortunately.

I totally know what you mean! Here in very southern Canada (more southern than most of the States) we are so heavily influenced by the American culture that it practically seems like US market isn't separate from ours! The Canadian artists popular here, however, receive little or no success in the US (i.e. Fefe Dobson, Danny Fernandes, etc)

yes! i agree, i love some european artists too but i cant even buy their music cause its sooooo expensive to import.

Not to mention, difficult to get a hold of!

Because people have always been searching the music from the US, and UK second, it is rare to see people in the US to search music from the rest of the world :P

I don't know about other countries, but here in the UK the media is completely starstruck by any American celebrity, no matter how big they actually are. For instance news sites here seem to have rolling coverage of the Kardashians, their show isn't even that big here.

The US music industry has the most monetary and promotional power behind it, making it easier for labels to promote American artists abroad than vice versa. Furthermore, since the United States' ascendancy to political, economic and cultural dominance post-World War II, English has become the "international language." Thus, international audiences are willing to accept music that is not in their native language, whereas American audiences are not. A singer (like Shakira, for example) has to learn English to break into the mainstream American market, or they can try and appeal to a certain niche.

Pretty much summed up by everybody here...But generally if an artist is exceptionally gifted they can become popular worldwide (even in the US) like Celine Dion, The Beatles, Hikaru Utada, etc.
