Raunchy music videos facing crackdown
Quote:
Risqué music videos from artists such as Rihanna appear destined for tighter regulation under recommendations put forward in a new report on the sexualisation of children.
An independent review, produced by the Mothers' Union chief executive Reg Bailey for Prime Minister David Cameron, is expected to call for an age ratings system for music videos to prevent children from being exposed to explicit content.
The report, due to be published on Monday, is expected to recommend the creation of a portal for parents to complain about products that are viewed as overly sexualised for children, such as clothes and accessories.
Bailey was tasked with investigating the pressures exerted on children in response to concerns from parents about the modern world becoming overly sexualised and commercialised for youngsters.
The investigation follows controversy over the sexual content of videos by pop stars, including the video for Rihanna's 'S&M' song being labelled unsuitable for under-18s by YouTube.
Bailey is expected to recommend that the video, advertising and retail industries should be given 18 months to voluntarily clean up their acts, or they would face government action.
He is likely to recommend that music videos should no longer be exempt from the Video Recordings Act and therefore be given specific age ratings. That would mean children would not be able to buy them in shops and online platforms would have to display age guidance warnings.
Regulatory bodies such as Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Authority could also be forced to engage more with parents on what is acceptable to show to children.
Media regulator Ofcom has previously faced criticism for allowing sexualised performances by Rihanna and Christina Aguilera on The X Factor.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said yesterday that it is updating its Parental Advisory Scheme to give more guidance on songs and videos that contain explicit content.
"We think it is important for parents to get the same standards of guidance and information online as they get when buying CDs or DVDs on the high street," said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor.
"We are updating our Parental Advisory Scheme for the digital age to ensure that explicit songs and videos are clearly labelled, giving parents the ability to identify material that may not be appropriate for their children."
Shadow justice minister Helen Goodman told The Guardian: "The voluntary approach has been tried and failed. We must have tougher regulations across the media, including social media."

Please, music is not all for kids.
They don't play the S&M music video on Disney Channel, they play it on BET. And if you gon let your kid watch BET, then bitch, you better not complain when your kid attempts to p***y pop and sing in a Barbados accent.
While we're at it, we might as well ban alcohol again. And ****. And PG13 movies, cuz the good lord knows those are basically R. The whole world should be 5 year old friendly!
