Korean mom allows daughter to have eye lid surgery
Quote:
A growing trend has Asian patients of all ages, from the middle-aged to adolescents, seeking out plastic surgery in an effort to make themselves appear more "Western," CNN is reporting.
Nose-reshaping, facial contouring and eyelid surgery are among the most popular procedures in Seoul, a city which has become a tourist destination for newly-rich, globally-competitive Asian patients seeking a more European look. And it's not just appearance that matters: some Korean mothers are having a part of their children's tongue muscles surgically snipped to ensure better English pronunciation.
"They can find a much better job if they have a pretty face," says Dr. Kim Byung Gun, a Seoul-based surgeon, who says foreign patents comprise 30 percent of his clientele. Of that 30 percent, he notes 90 percent are Chinese.
One mother cites Asia's competitive drive as the primary reason she's bringing her daughter to get eyelid surgery. "Yes, I think it'll help her," Jang Hyu Hye says. "This is a society where you have to be pretty to get ahead. She's my only daughter."
For the TL;DR crowd:
Both daughter and mother agreed to get eyelid surgery. Video talks about people getting surgery for their nose, to get a slimmer face and even cutting the muscle under the tongue surgically snipped so they could speak better in English (@2:53)
My friend went to Korea with her Korean friend last summer and she said people would walk out hospitals with bandages wrapped around their face like it's normal because plastic surgery is normal there. She said it's easy to find a Plastic Surgery place in Korea, it's like finding a fast food place in North America.
she looks exactly the same, the one where they said the lady didn't want a round Asian face 1:10 -1:15 they made her face round she had shape to her face before
A mess. Unless you got a severe birth defect or something of that sort, you should not be getting surgery. Oh well I won't complain, seeing as how a lot of people get cosmetic surgery
While I know that this seems bizarre and horrible to the majority of Westerners, this isn't even considered surgery in Korea. It's considered like botox or a rejuvenation technique; it's very common for K-pop singers, too, and if this girl wanted to be a singer or be famous, then she'd have to have this done. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. It's very common in Korea, and while it's not something I personally support, we have to understand that it's okay contextually. Does that make sense?

My Korean friend (visa student) said she got some things done. She's really really, realllllly pretty and everyone is always staring at her but she looks like a doll. Her skin is so perfect, her face shape and nose, etc. She said her friends get it done but she said it to me like it was normal
This is popular in Asia, especially in Chinese (and other close relations) speaking countries. Philippines is definitely enjoying a high number of tourists visiting the country just to get something plastic-medically fixed coz it's a lot cheaper to have the surgery performed here than in other countries. Same goes with Thailand too, but at least most of the population here are not obsessed with plastic surgery.
Most black female artists wear weaves, do we care? I'm patting my head right now. It's sad, but that's their choice. It's not as bad as height increase surgery where they break their bones into certain part to make them taller. I heard it's become popular in China.
I guess it's normal over there. In America it's normal to tan. I'm sure THEY don't understand why some of us tan.
Yeah in the summer my Korean friend doesn't understand why we do it. She hates going under the sun. She said she wants her skin to be pale, like a ghost. I could understand because in the Korean entertainment, they all have nice pale skin.
Why is everyone saying "Asians" and "in Asia"? It's just East Asians and East Asian countries. Asia is a huge continent not just made up of the EA countries (China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, etc.)
As for the surgery, what's the big deal? I'm sure there are plenty of moms here in America or other western countries that have allowed their daughters to get nose jobs or boobs jobs.
