There will be a new film without Angelina Jolie.
Angelina Jolie perhaps first became well known as an action star because of her role as Lara Croft in the two Tomb Raider films.
Now, it seems that filmmakers are attempting to give another leading lady the spotlight by rebooting the series with a new female lead.
According to Reuters, there isn’t a definite line that the story will take yet, but it’s possible that the filmmakers will start with a younger actress to do a film before the other two took place.
The film is set to be released sometime in 2013. Both of the previous Tomb Raider films have made millions of dollars worldwide, so perhaps that appeal of the type of film will help to draw audiences. The first two films feature Lara Croft exploring information about her past in order to discover key historical secrets.
Entertainment Weekly comments on the lack of female action stars in today’s films. In film series like Die Hard and Terminator and even series like The Mummy and Indiana Jones, the action stars are predominantly male. Entertainment Weekly also speculates who should be cast as the female lead to take over Lara Croft’s adventures. They list Mila Kunis, Scarlett Johansson, and Gemma Arterton as potential choices. Johansson and Arterton have both been involved with action films already with Johansson acting alongside Robert Downey, Jr. in Iron Man 2 and Arterton getting adventuresome in both Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
