The media's treatment of Charlie Sheen vs. Chris Brown

Quote:
Chris Brown should be on top of the world. His new album F.A.M.E. dropped today, with already three No. 1 songs. It's also currently the most downloaded album on iTunes. So when Brown went on "Good Morning America" to talk to Robin Roberts, he was probably in a pretty good mood, and put on a game face to discuss his current status with Rihanna, his ex-girlfriend and pop star whom Brown assaulted before the Grammys in 2009.
But Robin didn't let the topic drop, and kept maneuvering their discussion back to the felony charges that Chris pleaded guilty to, along with the restraining order that the R&B star is trying to get downgraded. Chris struggled through the segment and then allegedly started getting violent: breaking the glass of his dressing room window, screaming, and ripping off his shirt.
While Brown's anger issues are certainly a topic for conversation, I just have to wonder: Where was this tough line of questioning when Charlie Sheen was on ABC? After all, the actor also pleaded guilty to assault charges on ex-wife Brooke Mueller and according to the police reports taken that night, it wasn’t the first time Sheen had become physically violent with her, previously throwing her to the ground and causing a head injury severe enough to require medical assistance. (Neither Mueller nor Sheen reported the incident at the time.) And that wasn't the only incident. As Anna Holmes reported in the New York Times, Sheen's battery sheet -- only against women -- is a mile long:
Quote:
In 1990, he accidentally shot his fiancée at the time, the actress Kelly Preston, in the arm. (The engagement ended soon after.) In 1994 he was sued by a college student who alleged that he struck her in the head after she declined to have sex with him. (The case was settled out of court.) Two years later, a sex film actress, Brittany Ashland, said she had been thrown to the floor of Mr. Sheen’s Los Angeles house during a fight. (He pleaded no contest and paid a fine.)...
Last October, another actress in sex films, Capri Anderson, locked herself in a Plaza Hotel bathroom after Mr. Sheen went on a rampage. (Ms. Anderson filed a criminal complaint but no arrest was made.) And on Tuesday, Ms. Mueller requested a temporary restraining order against her former husband, alleging that he had threatened to cut her head off, “put it in a box and send it to your mom.” (The order was granted, and the couple’s twin sons were quickly removed from his home.) “Lies,” Mr. Sheen told People magazine.
|
And yet when Sheen was doing his crazy-ass publicity tour, these items were barely touched upon, with interviewers like Piers Morgan and Andrea Channing not questioning Charlie's claims that he's never hit a woman. (Despite court orders and guilty charges that say otherwise.)
This comparison did not escape Chris Brown, who tweeted directly after the "GMA" incident:

Look, all domestic violence is terrible, and celebrities are not above being held accountable for their actions. But what a dark double-standard that Chris must continually answer for his actions, unable to be known as anything other than "the guy who beat up Rihanna," while Sheen gets a free pass, possibly because none of the women he hurt were famous enough to bother caring about.

It's because he's black. Like with Janet and the Superbowl; she arguably gave away her career yet without choice however Justin got away from the incident skit free in fact his career thereafter flourished. The American media is generally harder on the African American community than the later.... which sucks.

Charlie Sheen is a minstrel show, the world is laughing at him, not with him and he just got fired from "Two and a Half Men".
Anyway, what does Charlie Sheen have to do with Chris throwing inanimate objects at windows?

As I posted in the OTHER Christopher thread:
1) It's hard to compare Rihanna and a woman NOBODY knows. Rihanna is an international popstar who has millions of fans worldwide, while Charlie's wife is local and is not given a second thought about. Plus, we never actually saw pictures of Brooke when Charlie beat her up, allegedly.
2) Charlie is bringing in millions of dollars for a network and is a bigger star than Chris Brown will ever be, Chris cannot compare himself to Charlie at all. Charlie doesn't get mad when people ask him questions in interviews, he simply answers (in his own special way) or says he can't talk about it.
I am going to wait for people to scream RACISM in this thread but the fact is that Chris needs to get his act together.

Once again let me say,
Charlie Sheen & Chris Brown are two different ppl w/ two different motives in life.
You'd expect some ******** from Charlie Sheen. Period. I mean just look at him ....
Chris on the other hand appeals to youth & especially young women so what he does has an impact on our Generation.
Charlie Sheen doesnt have tht popularity w/ teens right now. Chris dominates tht.
Is it bad tht ppl wouldnt expect this type of stuff out of Chris ?

Who cares.
You just posted this because you are obsessed with Chris' dick. Everyone knew about the Chris/Rihanna thing, and half the people didnt even feel bad. I bet with this, at least the people who know feel some type of sympathy.

Tell 'em how it is, Chris. I find the double standard a bit ridiculous. I do however find the blow-up at the studio a little much.

Like I said in the Chris Brown thread. It is double standard. The media keeps bringing the Rihanna incident up, yet they never talk about Charlie Sheen beating up on his wife and allegedly held a knife to her throat and there is no public outcry for him. Instead, some folks are just kissing Charlie's ass and dick riding him.
I'm not excusing any of their behavior, NO ONE should be hitting on anyone but why is it okay for one person but not okay for the other? It's ridiculous.

It's true, though. Everyone says people are only laughing at Charlie Sheen, but the laughter, from what I can tell, isn't malicious. The reaction to Charlie Sheen is "oh you." The reaction to Chris Brown is "**** YOU."
I don't think Charlie Sheen should be used to excuse Chris Brown's behavior, but the same standards should be applied to everyone.

I really cant at some of you. Stop pretending like you give a **** about this Charlie Sheen **** when you laughed at Rihanna's battered face and still make jokes about it to this day.
Charlie Sheen is completely different. I'm sure people will remember what he did for a long time, but his case wasnt as public as the Chris/Rihanna case, and this has nothing to do with the fact that Chris Brown still can't accept his actions, and has yet to realize when you physically abuse a celebrity that is your girlfriend and a picture of that celebrity abused leaks, that wont be forgotten.
They were his actions, and he is obviously still a violent/angry mess. I agree the reporter kept bringing it up too much, but too ****ing bad. I'm actually glad people people are still bringing it up, maybe next time he'll throw a person into a window and go to jail where he needs to be to calm his angry ass.

I agree that Charlie shouldn't be allowed to walk around like a Saint but this does not justify what Chris did what so ever. He can't use Charlie Sheen as a scapegoat!

If Chris Brown embraced his violent past, showed no remorse and acted crazy, he too could get the Charlie Sheen treatment. Key difference between Chris and Charlie, other than race, is Charlie is embracing his "villain" character.

Exactly.
This Charlie Sheen argument is just him and his fans trying to rid himself of the negative press.
And instead of using Charlie Sheen as a scapegoat, he should take accountability for his actions, apologize, and learn from the situation like any civilized man would do.

I love how Chris just assumes everyone has forgotten, and how its "just the past" and everyone loves him now, and hes automatically forgiven.
