Perhaps you should take a couple classes in Computer Mediated Communication. There have been countless studies that show the benefits of technology on social interaction both online and offline. And with a location-based social networking site you are alerted to who is around you at certain times so, if you felt compelled, you could arrange a meeting, face-to-face. That doesn't make communication abilities unnecessary, it makes them all the more necessary. I'm a communications major. I've had a lot of experience with these types of studies.
