Katy Perry coming for Top 10 record, passed Santana & Mariah
Quote:
EXTRAORDINARY: As noted Friday (March 4) in "Ask Billboard," courtesy of Chart Beat reader JonMichael Rasmus of Madison, Wis., Katy Perry last week matched the mark for most consecutive weeks spent in the Billboard Hot 100's top 10. As "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, soared 28-8 and "Firework" smoldered at No. 6 last week, Perry logged a 42nd week in a row in the chart's top tier.
This week, Perry moves into a solo share of second place for longest uninterrupted stay in the top 10, as "E.T." holds at No. 8 and, for good measure, "Firework" remains in the top 10 at No. 10.
At 43 straight weeks, Perry passes Santana, who linked 42 consecutive frames in the top 10 starting Sept. 4, 1999, with the No. 1s "Smooth," featuring Rob Thomas, and "Maria Maria," featuring the Product G&B.
(Mariah Carey ranks third with 41 consecutive weeks in the top 10 with "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men, and "Always Be My Baby" in 1995-96).
Perry's "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, arrived at No. 2 on the Hot 100 dated May 29, 2010. Her run continued with "Teenage Dream" prior to "Firework" and "E.T."
The only act in Perry's way for the record? Ace of Base, who occupied the top 10 for 48 consecutive weeks beginning Oct. 16, 1993, with "All That She Wants," "The Sign" and "Don't Turn Around."
As pointed out in "Ask Billboard" Friday, Ace of Base might not mind if Perry bests the group's record stretch.
Said Perry when she was working on "Teenage Dream" in 2009, "I'm kind of thinking I want to do my record like a mesh between 'Lovefool' by the Cardigans and 'The Sign' by Ace of Base. I want to make songs that people want to hold hands and roller-skate to."
Ace of Base reciprocated the admiration.
"I listen to ... Katy Perry and find myself in turn being inspired," says Ulf Ekberg, Ace of Base's co-founder (with Jonas Berggren).
"In many ways ... 'I Kissed a Girl' opened up radio for pop and dance again. We did a little of that in the early '90s in the U.S., so it's amazing (that she's) inspired by us."

I'm very happy about this, but I still think Santana's achievement is more impressive.

Beyonce spent 31 weeks in the Top 10 with CIL and Baby Boy but then she dropped out and three weeks later Me Myself and I entered, she could have had this record.

ET is going to go #1 pretty much, top 3 at worst, so 10 more weeks in the top 10 is a given imo.
The question is, will Last Friday Night penetrate the top 10 before ET leaves? Now that would be GROUNDBREAKING.

I mean E.T. is just starting, i can see it being 10 weeks in Top 10 at least.....

ET IS JUST STARTING. that's totally true.
If it slays like Fireworks, this song can carry that top 10 standing into summer, and when TGIF got release, i really don't know what happen

That still wouldn't give Beyonce the record though as there was a gap between MM&I and Naughty Girl too.
If Paparazzi had entered the top ten a couple weeks earlier Gaga would be on 67 weeks
