Yes, but it makes the record labels more greedy, and that's what has caused the loss of individuality in music because labels ONLY want hits and quick cash. Before they invested in individual projects, and made money from the artist's fanbase and were happy. Now you don't make money unless you're mainstream and charting, so labels are starting to lose interest in artist's personal interest in their music and they just want everything to sound the same.
Look at how hard Avril had releasing Goodbye Lullaby? Kelly releasing My December etc. etc. Ciara is having issues with Jive over it.... it's having the opposite effect on music rather than what you say that it gives room for music to be art.
