CNN on Gaga, Madonna AND Marilyn
So simply and smartly put.
Quote:
Lady Gaga is of course merely a Madonna copycat, because if the singer they [Madonna fans] enjoyed in their youth is deemed passé, so are they.
This, naturally, ignores that Madonna wasn't born sealed in plastic wrap like a CD. She, too, was influenced by her peers and borrowed from her predecessors. And 25 years from now, some new artist is going to be influenced by what Gaga is doing now. And like clockwork, some of her middle-aged Monsters are going to cry foul in the same way Madonna's fans are now and Marilyn Monroe's fans did when Madge was being a Material Girl (channeling the original Blond Bombshell).

The little monsters pulling the Marilyn card again.
Madonna was inspired by Marilyn for just one freaking LOOK. The "Marilyn look" in the Material Girl video, which was OBVIOUSLY a tribute/homage/copy to Marilyn. She even said it a million times.

^^^^ Didn't you used to stan for Gaga?
Anyway, while Gaga is obviously inspired a great deal by Madonna, the main reasons they're compared are because they both happen to be talented blonde white women who shocked and owned the world. If everything remained the same but Gaga had been a (Rihanna) red head this entire time, 88% of the comparison's would cease to exist. True story

I wasn't implying you weren't a stan for your criticism. I was asking because you referred to "litttle monsters" in third person speech. I just thought you were a stan for some reason.

Furthermore, it's one thing to emulate a person's look (is that not just the essence of the entire fashion industry?); it is another thing entirely to take someone else's art and repackage it as your own.
But I feel that, thus far, Lady Gaga has been quite an original, despite her many pop cultural influences. All the more reason, then, that I was disappointed by the fact that "Born This Way" is just a Madonna retread. I know Lady Gaga can be better than that.

The Madonna comparisons are becoming ridiculous. It's alright to note the similarities, but when people start throwing around words like "plagiarism" things are getting blow way out of proportion.

The Madonna comparisons are, thankfully, becoming a joke. I have read in other boards and articles some of the most ridiculous things. Some of my favorites:
- Madonna invented pony tails
- Madonna invented eye pieces, funerals (because of Evita, of course!) and men in heels (the Alejandro video)
- Gaga's next single, Judas, will rip off Madonna's Isaac, because Gaga copied her in having a song named after a character from the bible
And like Mystic Boy, I'm a HUGE Madonna fan. And if I focused on everyone she was influenced in, from Marilyn to Björk to Greta Garbo and Goldfrapp, I wouldn't be able to enjoy her undeniably GREAT work.
Same goes for Gaga. Their main similarities are not the fact that Gaga is influenced by Madonna. Is how they are pop cultural sponges of numerous references, who put out work that, despite drawing heavily from different genres and visuals, always seem and hold on their own as a Lady Gaga or Madonna song.
Gaga's influences have gone from Freddy Mercury to Madonna, to Shania Twain (in the Telephone video anyone?), to Isabella Blow.
The only bitterness in all of this are the tired old queens who are like 40, 50 now seeing Madonna well on her way out and Gaga well on her way up to becoming the second biggest thing in pop music since Madge.

My point exactly.
Is it really that AWFUL that Lady Gaga is admittedly inspired by the best pop artist of all time?
Like I've said numerous times, at least she's not ripping off her contemporaries by hiring Dr Luke and Max Martin or David Guetta to produce the most generic, homogeneous music out there.
She's standing out by drawing heavily, in BTW, from the late 80s, early 90s sound, which, SHOCKER, was dominated by Madonna. Add that to Gaga's domination in the pop world, the comparisons were inevitable.
But it's good pop, as always. Better than any of her contemporaries. Enjoy it for what it is and its message and put the Madonna stuff to bed.

True. But Rihanna doesn't possess the kind of swagger or image calculation that M & G do.
Anyways, GaGa is overrated just as much as Madonna was during her heyday but they're still the best pop artists of their time. I would probably stan hard for GaGa if her songwriting wasn't so sloppy because it is amazing how much her career and impact parallels Madonna's during the 80's.

Glad the world knows the whole truth CNN now shutting all the haters down. No one is original and the fact that these stans.. think that Lady Gaga "copies so hard from Madonna" when she really doesn't is a big joke.

She DOES copy from Madonna, but so did and does Madonna from others, so does everybody, intentional or not.
