Artistic appropriation is nothing new, but for the hell of it let's take a look at the latest alleged offense committed by pop star Rihanna and her video for new single "S & M".
The clip, directed by Melina Matsoukas, encompasses a bunch of characteristically bold sartorial choices, nay, bold everything, some ******** over-saturation effects and makes for a playfully engaging and adequate compensation for the okay-ness of the song itself… Only problem being, the video is all too reminiscent of some of the most iconic works of renowned fashion photographer David LaChapelle, right down to his signature man-on-a-leash pics.
LaChapelle is suing for damages with the claims "the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works." Reuters reports the photographer has said the "S & M" video had appropriated eight of his images into the video and asserts that Rihanna has copied the "composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colours, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting" of his work."
