Super Bowl XLV overnight U.S. TV ratings tie record
Fox Sports released preliminary Super Bowl ratings that suggest the network could have a record-setter on its hands. The numbers indicate Sunday’s game matched the event’s highest overnight rating ever.
Super Bowl XLV earned a 47.9 metered market rating, tying with Super Bowl XXI in 1987 as the biggest number ever using this metric. Since the nation’s overall TV viewing audience has grown considerably since then, there’s a very real chance of Sunday’s game hitting a new all-time viewership high when the national ratings are released in a couple hours (the Glee numbers will be out then too).
The Super Bowl audience has climbed every year since 2005, peaking last year at a staggering 106 million viewers and a 38.6 adults 18-49 rating. Last night’s 47.9 metered market household rating — which gives you a sense of the percentage of viewers that tuned in — is 3 percent higher than last year’s overnight number.
