How can LGBT rights advance in homophobic counties?
Many anti-gay countries believe that being LGBT is a social lifestyle and a construct of the western world (or in other words the "white man's disease" and are heavily religious. There are 76 countries that treat being lgbt as a crime, and many of them are developing countries
What do you think could be done to fix the situation in these countries?
Visibility changes perceptions, but at the same time it could be dangerous so it's hard to say exactly what to do in countries that have sodomy laws. I suppose challenge them in court and you might win like in a few places.
'Leave' is easier said than done. Moving from place a to b is already difficult but moving to another country is even more difficult. Only democracy can help them in the long run. Russia for example isn't a democracy as we know it.
First, Leave the godforsaken country and then in whatever better country you currently reside in, EXPOSE pure evil and hate about the verbal abuse and homophobia you've escaped from, that would put them in the puts and try to defend themselves. I would gather all the evidence and materials first.
everybody says leave, how can someone leave their own country and the home they grew up in abandon their own family and friends
that's not an easy thing to do, i'd rather stay and have no rights than leaving
Nothing can be done to change homophobic societies' perception of and attitude towards homosexuality. Homosexuality is generally frowned upon when societies are vulnerable. It is economic prosperity that fosters tolerance. Western society used to be just as homophobic as these societies just less than 60 years ago. They will eventually become more accepting of or indifferent, at least, to homosexuality when their quality of life improves.
ya'll It's not that easy to just pack up and leave.
Going to a new place, maybe not knowing the language, culture, anybody is scary and hard.
It's much more complicated.

Your family and friends are against it; what do you do now?
