He doesn’t sing, he doesn’t dance and he’s not on YouTube. He also died over two centuries ago, but none of that has stopped Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from scoring the best-selling CD of 2016 with a disc released just five weeks ago.
With a total of 1.25 million copies sold since the end of October, as Billboard reports, Mozart has beaten Drake’s Views, Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo and Beyoncé’s Lemonade. And all of that without doing a single promo tour.
But the disc in question was no ordinary release. Unveiled on October 28 to mark 225 years since the prolific composer’s death, Mozart 225 actually comprises an extraordinary total of 200 CDs running to over 240 hours of music altogether.
Produced by Decca and Deutsche Grammophon in collaboration with the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation, the project has been declared “most authoritative, complete and scholarly box set ever devoted to the work of a single composer”.
With each individual CD of the box set counted as a sale, only about 5,556 people have actually gone out to buy the collection. Nonetheless, Mozart still technically wins the title with the mammoth anthology. Take that, Drake.
It literally says the box set only sold over 6k
They're talking about all the box sets sold added together is 1.25M physical CD's, which is more than our favs because our favs sell more digital copies
