Okay, so imagine a state has 10,000,000 people and 20 electorate votes.

And the result was like this:

Donald Trump: 6,000,000
Hillary Clinton: 4,000,000

They would get a corresponding proportion of the electoral votes for that state:

Donald Trump: (6,000,000/10,000,000) x 20 =12
Hillary Clinton: (4,000,000/10,000,000) x 20 = 8


The way it is at the moment is totally flawed. How can there be a 10,000 vote difference out of millions, yet the loser doesn't take literally any of the votes? Ridiculous. That's not democracy. At least people would feel like their votes matter.

True. But since so many people seem so opposed to the democratic idea of a popular vote, this would be the next best option.

So, a popular vote? But if the electors had to vote for their person, then surely there'd be more instances where 50% isn't achieved by anyone and there wouldn't be the same element of coalition agreements as in other countries, effectively throwing the result to Congress.

Nice idea but either keep the old system or get rid of it entirely.

The method of giving out electoral votes proportionally is basically using the popular vote and just giving it an extra unnecessary step before it's used.

I wish I would have saved my work, but I went through and updated electoral college numbers in each state to be proportional with all the other states. 500k people = 1 electoral college vote. Unfortunately, it still had Donald Trump winning the election so I deleted it (). However, if the nation wants to keep the electoral college, that is has to be how we use it.

Hmm isn't that how it's done for the Democratic Primary? I don't understand the discrepancy. I wonder if Bernie would have won the primary had it been majority wins for each state
