It depends. As weird as it may sound, I'm still friends with my ex-BF from my high school years. We dated for 4 years. Probably the worst relationship I've been in.. but I still talk to him from time to time. i guess we still have the same sense of humor and sometimes we'll send each other random stuff. he lives far away now.
he even met my current boyfriend.. and it was all fine. I could never go back to him so i think that's why i'm able to remain friendly with him

if the relationship ended in a mutual agreement then yes it's okay
It's petty highschool crap or people with that kind of mentality that don't want to just because they broke up when nothing bad happened
If you're mature then it's possible and you should do it. If you loved that person while you were dating, what's the point of throwing them away like trash once you're broken up? It doesn't make sense
In fact when I go on dates w a new guy I pay attention to the way he talks about his ex's and how he treats them after their relationships have ended bc it's very telling of how he would treat you too

OT: It can be (probably will) difficult and really awkward when you see each other for the first time after the break (even after a few weeks), but with time and maturity from both parts, yes, it can happen.
