SUSAN Boyle won’t watch the scandalous Like a Prayer video.
The huge Madonna fan has tackled the superstar’s iconic 1980s hit on her latest album, A Wonderful World, reinventing the gospel-flavoured pop song as a “conversation with God”.
Boyle sounds like a young choir girl on the delicate arrangement of Like a Prayer, which she describes as one of the most challenging songs she has recorded over seven albums in as many years.
And while she is well aware of Madonna’s subversive video, which featured scenes of the pioneering pop star kissing a black saint and burning crosses, as a woman of faith Boyle chose to “overlook” it when deciding to record the unlikely cover.
“You find yourself in situations where you wish you had a telephone to God, especially at times when I haven’t been well,” she says from her home in Blackburn, Scotland.
“I know the song did get a lot of controversy back in the day but you don’t look at the video, you look at the song and how it was performed by Madonna and it was out of this world.
“It did worry me a bit because of my beliefs but I believe her intention was to bring the song to everyone’s attention and I have long been a fan of Madonna so I hope I have done it justice.”
