Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Should he win the national elections, presidential candidate Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte said he would consider legalizing same-sex marriage if a proposal is presented to him.
"If it reaches me in whatever capacity, I'll consider it," Duterte said on Thursday (February 18).
The Davao City mayor said the law mandates that marriage is between man and woman.
Duterte, who stressed he is against harrassment and bigotry, also believes members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community should be welcome to join the military.
So what happened? Marriage might be far off, but civil union is definitely possible (Philippine Family Code defines marriage as between man and woman, it'll be difficult to change that in the near future). Anti-discrimination law has not been passed yet. Should our Filipino sisses expect more pro-LGBT stuff from Duterte during his six-year reign over the Philippines?
This will never get passed under our current constitution which specifically and traditionally defines marriage as a permanent union between a man and a woman for which is also the reason why divorce is irrevocably illegal here. No attempt to amend the current 1987 Constitution has ever succeeded.
I guess because he's just the president. He doesn't create laws. It's still up to the congress/representatives. That's why he said 'if it reaches me'. I wouldn't count on it though. We can't even passed divorce and sex education. The country is still pretty much conservative because of religion.
And I think there's no huge demand/pressure from the gay community. It seems that we're just fine with LGBT rights in the country and actually find gay marriage a little extra since the country have far more problems that needs to be resolve. And we understand that. There are discrimination of course but not to the extreme.
