Why is it that weird? Before Europeans colonized it, South Asia was ruled by Mughal rulers from Central Asia who brought Islam. West Pakistan (now Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) were literally created by the British because Muslims demanded their own sovereign country when they left.
It's the same in Southeast Asia. Before European and Middle Eastern influence, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, etc. were Hindu/Buddhist.
