Lemonade has been hailed by critics, celebrities, and fans, as one of the best and highest quality albums released this year. 25, when you take away any mention of sales numbers, while a great album, has not received anywhere near the amount of critical praise as Lemonade, and has been seen by some as a retread of past subject matter.
Lemonade is important because it is daring, it is political, it is experimental, it's fresh, and for these reasons and more, it is universally acclaimed. People believe Lemonade is the album of the year because it ticks all the boxes of what an AOTY should.
Beyoncé had been a much safer top 40 artist in the past, now she's making explicit racial and political statements in her work. Technically, it is a marvel, the production touches nearly every genre under the sun, yet it never once feels cheap or contrived or phoned in; Beyoncé effortlessly shifts from trap, to R&B, to soul ballad, to rock, etc. etc. etc. and in the visual accompaniment is more polished than some blockbuster films. Lemonade is one of the most important albums of the year and has hugely contributed to this years social landscape and culture, regardless of what a few pressed internet trolls seem to think.
