I have difficulty, I must admit. Barbra has experienced extraordinary success but often that success feels as though it's in a bubble. She excels at everything she does, but it's hard to pinpoint how she shifted culture, if she did at all. Aretha has much more clear influence, but her hit-chasing in later years and her lack of discipline led to an artistic and commercial decline, whereas Barbra maintained her brand and a reputation for integrity and with those, her commercial viability.
