Imagine if, during the Jim Crow era, a newspaper offered advertisers the option of placing ads only in copies that went to white readers.
Facebook’s ad platform now guesses at your race based on your behavior. That’s basically what Facebook is doing nowadays.
The ubiquitous social network not only allows advertisers to target users by their interests or background, it also gives advertisers the ability to exclude specific groups it calls “Ethnic Affinities.” Ads that exclude people based on race, gender and other sensitive factors are prohibited by federal law in housing and employment.
I don't see what's wrong? I don't think this should be illegal. It would be wrong if a company refused to market to a particular race, but I don't think it's wrong to tailor ads for the same or similar content by race.
Gosh, some people from the US forget the world exists outside of the US sometimes.
Facebook is global. No point advertising certain things to certain cultures.
This isn't about "oh, she black, let's advertise wigs" or something shady, it means ads can appeal targeted to certain cultures that have more appeal to certain things.
