Anonymous and New World Friday, two hacktivist groups, claimed responsibility for the attack on Friday, according to Politico. The groups said the assault was in retaliation for the shutdown of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s internet access in Ecuador. Security experts told Politico, however, that the true culprit has yet to be confirmed.
They weren't hacked, only the server that handles requests to direct people to those sites (remember: the internet works as sort of a phonebook. DNS servers are there to link people to IP addresses masked with a URL) was overloaded which caused those sites to be down for a while. That does NOT mean that user information was extracted, which is what hacking would've been
