I never understand the 'why'. There is a 95% probability you'll get caught and end up in jail or prison. So 'why' do they do it?

What goes through their mentality process that makes them think it's ok to go forth with their decisions without dealing with the consequences?

I too would want to do some things but unfortunately the police would definitely catch me.

Because they want something and figure the legal way of doing it isn't convenient or plausible. Then there are the people who are so disassociated from society that they don't care. And then there are crimes that shouldn't really be crimes, drug use is a good example.

Most crime is done out of need.

There are a select few crimes (like rape) that are inherently cruel and done out of maliciousness that could never been explained as done out of need or survival.

Some people feel the world owes them something, so committing the crime is their way of getting back at whatever's troubling them or whatever injustice they experienced. Also criminals obviously lack self discipline, not everybody has that

Some people feel there is no other option, others simply do not care as they do not have a guilty conscience. These would be the two most likely situations, I think.
