Because they want something and figure the legal way of doing it isn't convenient or plausible. Then there are the people who are so disassociated from society that they don't care. And then there are crimes that shouldn't really be crimes, drug use is a good example.

Need? you mean most crimes are committed because of drugs
Some people feel the world owes them something, so committing the crime is their way of getting back at whatever's troubling them or whatever injustice they experienced. Also criminals obviously lack self discipline, not everybody has that
Some people feel there is no other option, others simply do not care as they do not have a guilty conscience. These would be the two most likely situations, I think.
