Watch the show, The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, it's really great and informative.
OJ was a star football player and basically a celebrity for that reason. His wife of 7 years divorced him on the grounds of abuse, and was found stabbed to death 2 years later....there was a ton of evidence suggesting it was him. He even tried to make a run for it instead of turning himself into the courts. It was a huge case that a ton of people were watching and there was an overwhelming amount of reason to believe he did it. Racial tensions were high at the time and the defense tried to make a case that the officers were framing him and doing it because of his race, and a lot of black people at the time wanted to root for him and believe him for that reason.
