Weezer's sophomore album, Pinkerton, was released twenty years ago on 24 September 1996. Written solely by front man Rivers Cuomo during his lonely time at Harvard University, the album exposes his fears and emotions, particularly those involved with women and relationships. The band chose to self-produce it, resulting in a slightly harsher sound than their commercial debut. At the time, the album flopped and received a mixed reception at best, but has gone on to achieve cult status and acclaim. The album's reissue received a 100 on Metacritic.

...the 1996 album itself remains Weezer's finest hour and, arguably, the entire emo genre's: 10 cringingly candid confessions of frontman Rivers Cuomo's desires, frustrations, and hang-ups, spilled out over pop-punk arrangements with ambition and bite.

...what ultimately distinguishes Weezer is how they sonically mirror the unhinged and private mental terror of its narrator.

Loosely structured as a concept album based on Madame Butterfly, each song works as an individual entity, driven by powerful, melodic hooks, a self-deprecating sense of humor, and a touching vulnerability...full of crunching power pop with a surprisingly strong emotional undercurrent that becomes all the more resonant with each play.

At the end of the day, few people will doubt Pinkerton‘s power, and whether you’re hearing it for the first time or just for the first time in a few months, it remains as visceral a listen as ever...few albums get better than Pinkerton.
