7 Time Olympic Champion, Vera Caslavska, Passes Away
She is commonly listed as one of the greatest Olympic gymnasts of all time. She passed away today at the age of 74.
She also made a big political statement when she bowed her head during the playing of the Soviet anthem during a few events at the 1968 Games. At the time, the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia and she had to flee her home and had to train in a forest before the competition.
She was also the first female gymnast to score a perfect 10 in major competition. She scored two during the event finals of the 1967 European Championships. Nadia Comaneci didn't score her famous perfect tens until 9 years later.
