Frank Ocean has gone independent. Early on August 19, Ocean released his new visual album Endless. On August 20, he released his new album Blonde. The Endless visual album “fulfills Frank’s obligations to Def Jam and Universal,” a source close to the situation told Pitchfork. Blonde was self-released, the source said. While the credits at the end of Endless name Def Jam, the metadata on Blonde simply credits “Boys Don’t Cry,” which is also the title of Ocean’s new magazine.

Just posted this in the other thread. Yeah. Distribution labels are definitely shook. Frank did 225k first week and he's going to pocket most of that revenue.

I can see it becoming a trend. Many big stars only stay with larger labels for distribution. With sales declining, it's beginning to make more and more sense to go digital only. And with a large company like Apple... I mean. It'll take time, but in like 5/10 years I see the industry shifting a lot.

Well look at Macklemore he's been indie since the beginning

CL is basically indie here In the uS but I think this kinda works for people like frank and chance that don't aim for radio hits and stuff. This is risky for pop acts that rely on radio and hits tbh.
