All the replies here are a mess.
The obvious answer is Viola Davis for The Help. Meryl Streep only won for her performance in The Iron Lady because of her overdue narrative for a third Oscar.
But all will be served right because Viola now has her own overdue narrative because of the snub. And that coupled with the movie industry making so many black movies this year after last year's #OscarsSoWhite will ensure her win this year with Fences. Bookmark me.

My response was perfectly legitimate.
If I recall, The Help was in a weird position where Spencer, Davis, and Chastain were all supporting roles and they sent Davis to lead because Chastain probably wouldn't have gotten a nom with Spencer and Davis both up for supporting—and they wanted all three nominated.
Meryl really was overdue, tho. The fact that she went nearly twenty years between wins.
I'm so pumped for Fences. I've been calling it Viola's Oscar winner ever since I found out it was being made. Lead Actress is really competetive this year, but I think that the closest thing Davis has to serious competition is Annette Bening (who actually has a greater "overdue" narrative than Davis).
Aja Naomi King will get a supporting nom for Birth of a Nation, too. Right now it sounds like Michelle Williams is the frontrunner for the win in that category, but it's still exciting that two HTGAWM actresses will be getting noms this year!
Speaking of Birth of a Nation, I wonder if the recent controversy with Nate Parker will push the voters to favor Denzel and Fences over Parker and BOAN. Denzel is pretty popular with the academy and could make history as the first actor of color to become a three-time winner.
