If I remember correctly, the change happened because LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. So I guess early republicans opposed slavery, but didn't think African Americans should be equal citizens.
Added to that, I also know that Evangelicals in America didn't vote until the government started desegregating schools, and when they lost that fight they started going after gays, abortion, and ****ography, and the right just keep doing more and more to court that voter demographic. So the Evangelicals have paid a pretty big part in the shaping of the modern Republican party.
