when they are getting reprimanded for saying something racist/sexist or homophobic. I noticed that when somebody is reprimanded for being racist/sexist etc etc they start saying " MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!1!1!11" " STOP CENSORING MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!1" i'm like why is it that the 1st amendment is only brought up in these circumstances discuss.

But you're right, many people seem to call on the first amendment all the time without really understanding its full meaning.

People only care about freedom of speech when they want to say something a bigot would say free of criticism and repercussions that aren't criminal in nature.
