All my LGBTQ college people, how did you handle the daunting task of coming out go your roomate? Today is my first day on campus, and my roomate is awesome but idk how to go about this.
He's sleeping now, so I want some advice for when I muster up the courage..
Do you really need to yet? I'm sure he'll find out eventually if you become good friends or you start bringing guys back to the dorm.
I guess I "came out" to one of my roommates a few years back and even though he was totally cool, it ended up being pretty pointless. He was obviously straight and we never became close friends, so it just wasn't worth the moment of anxiety and the dealing his ignorant questions and remarks that followed. You should never feel pressured to discuss your sexuality with him, it's not his right to know.
I have no idea what to say man. I met my roommate a couple months ago and we were just asking each other different questions to see if there were any issues. I just straight up asked him how he felt about a gay roommate and he said he was cool with it. We've been good ever since.
I literally made this same thread last month and the mods closed it we need blogs again.
The general consensus was that you don't owe your roommate anything. Maybe later down the road if you become friends, or if they straight up ask, but you don't have to feel obligated to tell them. I was going to tell mine first thing but changed my mind to wait. If it comes up, I'll be honest, but I don't want to give him a preconception from the start before he gets to know me.
I haven't done it since I know two are against gay marriage (although they're not really homophobic) and one I feel might take it well since he's pretty liberal but I can also see him feeling a bit uncomfortable. I'm also still low key in the closet so I don't really have to worry about them finding out.
I would say for you just make sure he seems like the kind of person to be okay with it.
You don't necessarily have to. Straight people don't have to disclose their sexuality, upon meeting people and I don't get society have it drilled into our heads that LGBT have to
But if you feel as though you must, just sit and have a conversation with him and tell him. Do you suspect he may be homophobic?
I mean, you don't have to It's funny cause my first year my roommate was gay too and like, we knew but we never really talked about it. We weren't very close. I talked more with my 2nd roommate & 3rd roommate but still, I never told them lol. The Lana Del Rey posters & lack of interest in girls should be their clue.
Yeah you don't need to tell them. Let them find out naturally. When I started my new job I didnt walk in first day and starting telling everyone I am gay. It comes out naturally, like "I'm seeing my boyfriend tonight".
If it comes up in conversation then go for it... you could even slot it in casually that way too I guess but I feel like having some big hyped up coming out session is only going to end in a mess. Just go with the flow.
My first roommate was really annoying so I thought maybe if I told him I was gay then he would change rooms. Sure enough, he did! So I used it as an asset
Just leave your laptop open with gay **** on the screen. He will either freak out and call you out on it or he will stay quiet and ask for a blow job when he's horny.
You don't have to. Just act yourself. If they detect something, they'd just get it themselves or ask you about it.
I had terrible roommates who were basically homophobic so...
If you have a boyfriend or date guys he'll find out & if he makes a deal out of it remember to contact your RA or someone from campus housing. And of course if you do become friends you can share that. But don't feel pressured to do it. Unless you go to a Christian college, it absolutely isn't an issue at all.
Like I know a roommate is somebody you'd like to get along with, but I'm sorry - it's now 2016 and I shouldn't have to check with anybody to make sure they're okay with my sexuality. If you don't like it, then that's really on you.
