Since the 2008 economic crisis, more men have taken to social media to post images of their fit bodies, according to the Journal of Gender Studies report. The trend, which experts have dubbed “s****osexuality,” reflects men attempting to seek validation through their bodies, instead of more conventional means, such as their work.

“Austerity has eroded young men’s traditional means of value-creation so they have become increasingly reliant on their bodies as a means of feeling valuable in society,” said study author Jamie Hakim, a professor at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. “In theoretical terms, so-called ‘s****osexuality’ is an embodied response to material changes brought about by neoliberal austerity.”

This. They tried, but you could find a link between any two trends if you wanted to. Where is the evidence? Shirtless selfies weren't as popular before because instagram is still fairly new..

HOWEVER, I do think the idea that some men value their appearance/body more because they feel worthless in society economically interesting. Personally, I do feel I've devoted a lot of time to my body looking perfect lately because I've been depressed and unemployed. I figure at least I'm sexy if I'm not happy or successful in my career right now.

Wait I'm completely opposite. I've devoted time to my body and overall appearance because I'm working with about 50 gym obsessed, moisturising gods and I had to compete.

I think is just that the world is moving in a different direction when it comes to physical beauty.
