This. They tried, but you could find a link between any two trends if you wanted to. Where is the evidence? Shirtless selfies weren't as popular before because instagram is still fairly new..
HOWEVER, I do think the idea that some men value their appearance/body more because they feel worthless in society economically interesting. Personally, I do feel I've devoted a lot of time to my body looking perfect lately because I've been depressed and unemployed. I figure at least I'm sexy if I'm not happy or successful in my career right now.
