...of a black woman winning Album of the year at the Grammys this decade? As much as it saddens me, I must admit she is.
Since the award was first handed out in 1959, only three black women have won;Natalie Cole (1992), Whitney Houston (1994) and Lauryn Hill (1999).
It has been nearly two decades and not a single black woman has won it as a lead act. Rihanna isn't taken seriously enough by critics or the committee and Nicki still hasn't won a single Grammy and the industry doesn't seem to give a chance to new black female artists and Bey has 22? awards already.
But with her recent release, she's garnered the greatest critical acclaim for a female artist since Janelle Monae in 2010, so can she pull through and fill that space?
i wish and i want Rih to get one too. i love ANTI and it's AOTY worthy. I want Beyoncé to win but we know that even the biggest critical acclaim isn't a sure indicator for a win. I'm sure if Rihanna continues to grow artistically the way she did from Una to ANTI, she'll have a huge shot at it too! (i hope)
You never know. A new artist might come up and snatch everyone. There's tons of new artists who've won AOTY. I guess Lauryn Hill, as a solo act, falls under that category too. Fingers crossed
I really don't see another black female artist getting it for A WHILE if she doesn't. Her biggest competition next year might be Adele, I'm not sure if an idie folk band has released yet, and I don't think they give posthumous awards so I guess Bowie might not get it, but then again who knows.

When was the last time the Grammys loved a new black female artist? Alicia Keys?
