There has been an interesting discussion going on in the US election thread. Many - often black - men refer to girls/women as ''females''. Now of course the word itself isn't degrading, but do you think the use of it is? Why? Or do you think there's literally nothing wrong with it? And why?
I guess the main argument against it would be that women =/= females since female is a biological term and women is socially constructed but like you're kind of splitting very specific hairs here
I really don't see the problem "female" is literally a synonym for "woman". Why are people making this a problem?
I wouldn't find it degrading, but kind of stupid depending on the context.
''First female president'' = normal
''Wow, look at those beautiful females over there'' = kinda weird
Female and women extreamly sexist and degrading, Non-he should create new words to refer to themselves that dont involve sexist words men, he and male.
1. Because the words "female" and "woman" mean different things.
"Female" is a scientific term that refers to the sex of a species that is capable of producing children. The term "woman" refers specifically to human beings, while "female" could refer to any species.
...
4. Because it is most often used to imply inferiority or contempt.
Not always, but often. And it's typically when "female" is used as a noun (i.e., "Females are the worst!"). Here's a fun exercise: Search the word "females" on Twitter and see what you get.
..
5. Because it's grammatically weird.
The word "female," in its primary usage, is an adjective. When you use "female" as a noun, the subject that you're referring to is erased.
Try ALL people, including medical professionals. Not just black men
I'm talking more of a regular, everyday situation. Not a professional one. It's definitely noticeable more black men refer to women as females than others do.
I personally don't think it's that big of a deal seeing as men are called males all the time and usually male and female are just terms used to identify someone's physicality.
That said, I don't usually refer to women as females unless I'm making a physical description. Usually I just say women. And if women think it's a big enough issue that men need to stop, so be it. I don't identify with what they grow through.
No there's nothing downgrading about. And provide some receipts that black men use the term more than anyone else. Did you just make up a fact?
Also, there's no difference between someone saying "females are the worst" and "women are the worst" as both have been used by idiotic men mostly in retaliation to "men are the worst". People just love being angry over the dumbest ****.
