Why does ATRL discredit social activism?
There is so much hatred and venom spewed at so called "SJWs!!!11!!", with the notion that anyone who discusses social issues online is not making any real change but rather complaining.
My issue with this, aside from it being a gross generalization, is that it's 2016. The internet has become the new norm for communication. Anti-SJW people argue that in order to make real change you need to be outside, marching, picketing, etc (even though I've seen protesters be called SJWs on here as well, but ok). However, being that everyone is connected to the internet, social activism has kind of become the most effective outlet for spreading awareness and change.
It's so funny to me when people denounce the BLM hashtag when black people and more have been protesting against police brutality for decades. The outcry for police reform didn't gain attention though until the BLM online movement began. And since, it has spread like wildfire and become the forefront on national debate.
I get that people love to hate on sJWs in the same way they hate on hipsters and vegans, cuz it's cool and "edgy", and I also understand that there are some online personas who can take things a bit far in the name of social justice. However, I feel most of those people are just young individuals who are still trying to figure themselves out and just want to live in a world where everyone is accepted. It might be naive and unrealistic, but at least their hearts are in the right place. Can't say the same for a lot of the users on this site (myself from time to time) who spread vitriol on a daily basis for "kiis" and "drags".
But back to my original point, it really irks me how people, especially ones from this generation who have grown up with the internet, still deny the power of social media and the influence it has on society. It's the reason celebrities get called out for not using their platforms. Social activism is the new norm. Some of you jsut choose to single out and focus on the parts of it you hate rather than focus on all the good it has accomplished. ie, the awareness of police brutality, awareness of gender identity issues, pages like GoFundMe being built to help out the families of deceased victims, etc.

Because they're consciously blocking out global issues. Shrugging off progression and belittling activism is their way of dealing with the world.

don't think it's just an ATRL thing. Thanks to many extra people from tumblr and twitter [hotep twitter specifically] that don't know wtf they talking about [and they're the ones that get the most attention] and often try to make something out of nothing, people have developed this misconstrued idea of social activism. I stand firmly behind BLM and many other movements but I don't blame people for looking at certain actions as foolish... like that video of that girl physically harassing that white man over his nasty dreads or being told you're ableist for using words like "dumb" or "handicap"
Long story short. "Haters" are just misinformed. The same way how "feminism" became a joke to many bc mainstream and social media watered it down and nobody wanted to take it seriously anymore. People still think it means "women are better than men"

Because they're ignorant and mad they can't say problematic things for kiis without getting rightfully clocked.
It's weird how they'll label anyone with the most basic level of decency an "SJW!121111" . Says a lot about them, ya?

They don't want to see anyone doing anything good for the world, especially with a celebrity they don't like. It's disgusting really.

They discredit anything that brings social awareness to 'oh it's the SJWs!!!!!111/tumblr'. Gender neutral pronouns, body-shaming, cultural appropriation. You REALLY think a blogging social media site invented those terms?
But when a good looking white YouTuber (usually male) talks about social awareness and rights within (LGBT) minorities, he's woke, intelligent, suddenly he cares.

Because it's an easy way to discredit and shut them down, giving them a sarcastic title so you can mock them and don't have to discuss the issues.

i mean there are a handful of trump supporters on this website so i'm not surprised at any actions taken.
that aside though a lot of these "social activists" aka social media activists can be the definition of too much. it gives the whole community a bad rep. the sour ones overpower the rest. it happens every community, it's called stereotyping.
if you were a true social activist then being called an SJW as an insult shouldn't bother you, you should rise above it, ignore it or try to let that person know whats up. not cry about not being accepted for it. it's taking away from whatever movement being advocated.
idk. i don't have a side here.

Ignorance. It's sad none of the gays read up on the history of the LGBT+ community. We were built off of SJW and none of these queers will understand what SJW truly are. They confuse them with keyboard warriors.
It's sad.

nnn there are several terms that blogging social media did invent. i saw this tumblr a while back full of so many ridiculous things http://pride-flags-for-us.tumblr.com/
and the cultural appropriation stuff does get taken too far. re: lena dunham talking about how eating sushi is cultural appropriation
but i agree they do discredit a lot of things.

Right? People were using these terms for decades. Just because knowledge can be easily digested through the internet now, does NOT mean that these things haven't been taught in colleges around the world before widespread social media
I guess that ignorant people see this activism on their newsfeeds now; where as before you actually had to read a book or do a degree to educate yourself on social issues.

exactly. it's the things like this that make people have this perception of those of us that believe in something. Usually, it's the ones that don't even belong to the race and/or group they are defending and have no first-hand experience of what they're posting about but do it anyway bc they think it's "the right thing to do"

I agree with body shaming and cultural appropriation to an extent but gender neutral pronouns is plain stupid. It's not real. And I hate that they're trying to mix that gender neutral movement into the LGBT community. They're not welcome. They can have their own community/movement.

I'm not denying Tumblr hasn't attempted to make up words, but the words I mentioned are not originated from Tumblr. They existed long before that.
But it's sad, because at least that blog knows more stuff than the average ATRLer. what they're doing isn't offensive at all.

You can be genderfluid regardless of your presentation, yes.

Yes, as pronouns are not limited to any one gender

and is waaaaay more open-minded too. You should see the responses in the 'if your kid wanted you to refer him as a gender neutral pronoun' thread

Of course! If that’s what you feel comfortable with, go for it

^ if only everyone actually thought like that.

Here's an example.
Closed-minded people wouldn't have been exposed to progressive movements pre-internet/social media. We hear all different opinions on the internet now - unfortunately.
