Jennifer Aniston’s battle cry against the media rings hollow

Aniston published an op-ed, criticizing the tabloid media for constant speculation over her looks, weight and whether she might be pregnant.

But, as with many instances of self-righteous celebrity outrage, there are multiple flaws here. Aniston’s decades-long fame and her value as a pitchwoman hinges on her cultural relevance. Her dream of being a cinematic leading lady has never really taken off — name the last Aniston movie you saw — and she seems to have no interest in returning to TV.

She’s steadily fed the media a personal narrative — a largely shallow one, a narrative nonetheless — to maintain her A-list aura. Aniston’s favored topics in interviews over the past 20 years include her diet, skin care, workouts, hair, clothes, vacations, vague platitudes about self-acceptance. Interviews with her are excruciating in their narcissism and banality — the unfettered musings of an incurious mind.

So it’s surprising that Aniston would suddenly appoint herself a cultural critic with a feminist agenda. Her essay is at best disingenuous, at worst outright hypocrisy.

Maybe she’s forgetting that massive cover story, in which she addressed rumors that estranged husband Brad Pitt had left her for Angelina Jolie, whether she was dating her latest co-star, and whether she really wanted children.

That quote ran on the cover, alongside a photo of a near-naked Aniston, clad only in an unbuttoned men’s shirt — one of many covers she’s done half-naked for magazines extolling her perfect figure.

Yet in her piece, she depicts herself as a passive victim of cultural objectification.

Until she married writer and actor Justin Theroux last year, Aniston kept working the poor, childless, jilted Jen narrative.

“I think people honestly just wanna see me as a mom and married and pregnant in the kitchen,” she told People in 2011, invoking every sexist cliché she now condemns. “I just wanna say, ‘Everybody, relax! It’s going to happen!’ ”

That she met Theroux, while he was still living with his girlfriend of 14 years, went largely unnoticed by the same tabloids she claims so casually victimize her. Quite a feat, given the irony her own romantic life had taken.

Aniston’s essay falls back on the ultimate celebrity humblebrag: “In this last boring news cycle about my personal life, there have been more newsworthy issues that ‘journalists’ could dedicate their resources towards.”

And yet Aniston felt the need to inject herself into the news cycle yet again, and voilá: Here we are, talking about her.

um where's the source? I'm intrigued and this is true... she and her team definitely used the Brad Pitt divorce to give her a narrative and that narrative has definitely helped advance her career and create a specific image of her being "lonely" to help come across as more relatable.

The Vanity Fair cover is iconic. I can still remember seeing like 6 people outside of a bookstore sitting down and reading it as my mom went in to pick up one for herself
