In other words, "RIP."

For some reason I find it very unpleasant and disturbing when used to pay your respects to someone who has passed. It just doesn't seem genuine and comes off as a form of mockery.

It doesn't take much to write out "rest in peace" people.

But what are your thoughts?

Absolutely.

I know it's an online forum, but if you are going to pay respect to somebody at least do it right.

I've never put much thought into it and have always used RIP. I get what you're saying though. For some reason I don't mind it as much as I mind when someone puts ILY instead of writing out "I love you." To me RIP is still a step above someone putting (on here at least).

It's ok imo, using is much worse

I don't mind it that much, but seeing the smiley in those threads are always so awkward.
It feels so, not genuine

As far as I am aware, I always type "Rest In Peace" as I do find it a bit weird saying "RIP".

I think the internet has ruined RIP, unless its typed in full it just doesn't have the right connotation for me anymore.

RIP in peace is much better.
