My grandmother liked Alicia Keys she hated everybody. I remember when Aaliyah died she herd her music and said Alicia is better than this. She also joked about Aaliyah not having a car and said she sure did love them planes though. She also called Lil Kim Nasty and said Tina Turner was fast cause of the short dresses she wears.
Not nearly as much as they used to. In the mid 90's and prior, the charts were predominantly ruled by what adults were listening to and the youth had a far smaller impact on Billboard than it does now.
Ever since the late 90's explosion of teen pop, children and teens began ruling what managed to chart successfully and that hasn't really changed since.
