Discussion: Will R&B/Hip-Hop Become the Best Selling Genre

Rock has been dominating the the music industry (in terms of sales & sheer volume) for nearly a century now, however, the R&B/Hip-Hop genre seems to be leading on all of the platforms that the new generation is utilizing to consume music.

Do you think it's only a matter of time until R&B/Hip-Hop becomes the defining genre of the United States music industry?

With streaming, yes.

Hip hop has potential because it's multi-faceted. You have catchy, trendy rap / trap that kills it on streaming, you have conscious hip hop that kills it in album sales and you have commercial rap that kills it on the radio and digital sales.

R&B, unfortunately, is going through a rough patch commercially and has been for almost a decade. Mostly because of lack of radio support. All r&b artists minus 7 or 8 of them only rely on urban AC, which is one of the smallest formats
