Madonna's pediatric surgery ward is almost completed
Quote:
US pop star Madonna will visit the Malawi on Sunday July 10, where she is expected to inspect work on the paediatric ward that her charity organisation, Raising Malawi, is constructing at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.
“The new facility, which will be completed by the end of the year, will have three operating theatres for surgery in children, a 50 bed ward, a day clinic, and the country’s first ever paediatric intensive care unit,” Ezzy said.
Madonna announced in November 2014 that Raising Malawi will construct the country’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit (ICU) as one way of reducing the pressure that is there due to shortage of surgical paediatric wards in the country.
In addition to serving more children, the new facility will become a training centre of excellence for Southern Africa, with more local doctors acquiring the skills needed to perform paediatric surgery.
This is amazing. She literally organised the construction of the country’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit. That is truly spectacular. When will anybody else's fave.
That's making a real difference. Everyone can make a sweet speech somewhere, but not everyone is prepared to put their coins into action. Giving money to charity isn't particularly impactful either, since most of it goes into pockets and salaries of people running them.
Raising Malawi got off to a shaky start, what with the publicity around the adoptions and the waste of funds by former administrators, but there's some real progress being made now.
How come stuff like THIS doesn't make the news? And I'm not talking about Madonna, the celebrity philanthropist, I'm taking about this being the first pediatric ward this part of the country has ever had?
