I sometimes wonder but I never actually ask because it can be rude

I for one don't do this because I particularly do not care to know where you are from. If we are talking about are birthplace and I happen to ask if they say a US city i'm like ok on to the next topic..

Not just in the USA but in most western countries. I'm eastern Asian and I've lived in the UK my whole life so it is annoying when they ask this.

and when someone ask their names and they tell you and it's a western name and the non-asian askee is like "oohhh noo what's your REAL name?"

It's definitely annoying to have been born/raised in a western country but never truly believed to be a "part" of that country if that makes sense.

I live in a city with a very large Asian population (of varying nationalities) and I once had a professor basically tell us all within the first 15 minutes of the first class that we should give him nicknames so it would be easier for him to not have to pronounce our "ethnic names".

Yeah I hate that. You're ao westernised, or 'white washed' but you still feel like the odd one out when you're at a party or something. All my friends are white and I live in a really white area and I feel like when people see me they look at me as if I'm a foreigner or a specimen

I've been to China and I got asked where I'm from heaps of times. Tf does it matter? It's called getting to know someone and showing interest in someone and wanting to know their nationality.. why does everything have to be taken so seriously???? I love knowing about where in the world people are from or where theit roots lay.

Something that has bugged me for a while is that White Americans are simply referred to as "Americans", while non-White Americans like Asians are labelled "Asian Americans". Maybe I'm just nitpicking but it just seem so... gross to have an ethnicity's name in front of their nationality. An American is an American.

Oh, and Asian treatment in western countries is vile. I know that here in NZ they were often described as the perfect immigrant because they assimilated (not by choice) so quickly into the country, so as to not piss off the White population with their ethnic ways. Racism to Asians is often overlooked, even on this site, though we won't get onto that because certain... groups.... of people..... will not be happy when they're called out on it.

The thing is though, Asians are a relatively new population in the US, and stupid as the way the guy acts in the video (and I'm aware it's a reality), there are a lot of Asians i the US that weren't born here.

Now, if you really must know the origin of an Asian person you're speaking to, simply ask them if they're originally from the area you're in and they'll probably tell you if they're foreign or just from the US.
