There is an election coming up in Australia and the two major parties (Labor and Liberal) are very different. Labor tends to appeal more to left-wing citizens, and Liberal more to right-wing citizens. My friend and I were discussing the election and she told me that the only reason young people (18 - 24 y.o) were voting for Labor was because they were dumb. She said that as soon as they hear that Labor supports marriage (and Liberal historically do not), they'll vote for them without considering the policies of the other parties.
I won't lie. A major reason that I do not support Liberal is because of their stance on marriage equality. But I also disagree with privatisation of our Medicate system, deregulation of university fees and tax cuts for big business. I try to keep up, but I am just one young person. Do you think young people are generally ignorant and too socially-minded, without regarding things such as economics? Or, do you think young people take everything into account (including social issues) and are underestimated by those who think we do not care?
I do think young people care more about social issues than economic issues, hence why most lean towards Labor. And both parties disagree with the privatization of Medicare. Malcolm and his party have made it clear they aren't touching Medicare, it's a fear campaign led by Labor to drive votes.
I had no idea who I was gonna vote for until I took an election quiz a couple days ago. It really opened my eyes. I was already leaning towards Labor but I got a 93% match with them and their views. I retook the quiz just to make sure, without answering all the questions that time, and got 93% match again.
It's about so much more than marriage equality, sure that's a big deal for the LGBT community, but healthcare and education are such big issues that the Australian population should be concerned about. I'm definitely voting Labor #1 tomorrow and while I won't tell anyone who they should vote for, I'd strongly recommend doing a similar quiz because it really opened my eyes up to what my vote really means.
Don't let all the annoying promo, slander and false promises cause you to be disinterested and vote unwisely, that's partially what they count on. It doesn't take too long to take a second thought about who you're actually voting for and more importantly what you're actually voting for and how they may affect your own life after the election. There are a lot of ignorant young people, yes. I was one. Don't be one.
OMG HAHAHAHA I SCREAMED AT THIS GIF. Yeah, it's a bit of a reverse Warholian experience in Australia because you're generally more conservative if you vote for the Liberal party.

I think you need to be concerned with your own ignorance and stop worrying about other people.... i.e...You're doing just fine. Old people have been getting us into messes for decades. They never own up to it.

That's a good point! You should work to improve the breadth of your knowledge so that you can make the most informed decision as you can. I like the way you think!
