Moral outrage aside, (let's put on our thinking cap here) when a huge company like that wins a case; it's a pretty standard legal strategy to recoup the legal costs from the plaintiffs. It's smart because it intimidates the opposing potential parties from seeking a lawsuit if they know precedence won't favor a win in their favor. Whether you agree or not, it's what it is especially since they got sued over something they had no control over (theater shooting) nor had any reason to actually believe there was imminent danger.
