Kanye West -- I 'Spawned' Taylor Swift's Success
Kanye West has always split people down the middle, you’re either gonna love him or hate him, but lately the self-proclaimed “genius” seems to be tipping the scales further towards the negative side, rather than trying to rebuild a bad image that was created solely from his own egotistical actions. Kanye’s latest blunder comes in comments made on radio show Mojo in the Morning, where he implied that his VMA stunt was responsible for Taylor Swift’s popularity.
Quote:
I feel like when Taylor was getting all those magazine covers, she was all good then. I feel completely empathetic and sympathize with that moment of her feeling bad, that spawned her to have one million magazine covers and be the most popular artist in the world, but in that moment of her feeling bad, I do feel bad about being the cause of that. Well, he did helped her to get a million covers after the incident, but no way did he help her gain success. Anybody who thinks so needs serious help and needs to take a look at Taylor's stats before that incident.

I do agree he somehow helped her to become more popular, she was already extremely popular though...

* Taylor’s self-titled debut ‘Taylor Swift’ was already certified four times Platinum, and hadn’t left the Billboard 200 since it’s release in October 2006.
* ‘Taylor Swift’ was the third highest-selling album of 2008; her sophomore album ‘Fearless’ was the sixth highest, despite only being released in November of that year. This was the first time in the history of Nielsen SoundScan one artist had two different albums in the Top 10 on the year end album chart
* ‘Fearless’ already had the highest first-week sales of 2008 for a female artist (592,304).
* ‘Fearless’ was already the highest selling album of 2009, having been certified 4x Platinum and counting.
* ‘Fearless’ was just one of two albums in 2009 (along with Susan Boyle’s ‘I Dreamed a Dream’) to sell over 3 million copies in the US in 2009.
* ‘Fearless’ was already tied in fifth place as the longest-running No. 1 album in Billboard chart history (11 weeks).
* ‘Fearless’ had already spawned it’s three biggest singles: the multi-platinum, top five smash “Love Story” which was the first country crossover to reach number one on the Top 40 pop chart; the Platinum-certified top twenty hit “White Horse”; and the one of the biggest hits of Taylor’s career, “You Belong With Me”.
* Taylor had already appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

The article also listed them. Just in case anybody needs them.

I don't like Taylor that much, but I don't like how people try to downplay her like she was a unknown flop before that incident.
I think she does have some sympathy sales and a lot more media exposure, but the girl was already selling big before Kanye.

no matter how controversial it may be him actually admitting that in public, there's obviously some truth to it. it's the same thing that happened with the rihanna/chris brown incident - rihannas super-stardom was ironically catapulted sky high by being the victim and chris' reputation was ruined. likewise kanyes reputation was really damaged to the point where he had to leave america and now taylor swifts album sells 1 million copies in its opening week.
no coincidence lol

Oh & FYI Taylors label agrees
Quote:
At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, rapper Kanye West famously interrupted Tyler Swift’s acceptance speech for the best female video award to declare that Beyoncé deserved the honor. Swift was widely viewed as the victim, West came off to many people as the villain.
But did West actually help Swift’s career?
According to Nielsen SoundScan, the country singer’s first album, 2006’s “Taylor Swift,” sold 4,821,000 albums (plus 10,760,000 digital songs from the album). Her second album, 2008’s “Fearless,” sold 6,027,000 albums (plus 15,165,000 digital songs from the album) and, in the wake of the incident, became the best-selling album of 2009.
Swift’s music was already selling well pre-West. But post-West, her profile was raised even higher.
“The Kanye incident brought attention to Taylor, to an audience that did not really know her or her music,” says Scott Borchetta, the president of Big Machine, the record label that puts out Swift’s music. “And when they did check it out, they discovered that they really liked it.”

It definitely helped boost her career, but she was huge before that. I mean, she obviously won Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs for a reason.

Taylor is at the top of everyone's lists. Where is Kanye? At the bottom of the barrel. Thank you, Kanye.

On the contrary I think the Chris Brown incident actually tainted Rihanna's career. Look at how Rated R performed vs. GGGB, proof.

yes...the amount of press she got from that did a great deal for her, regardless of how popular she was before
somebody comparing her incident to Rihanna and CB

Taylor was obviously very well known before the incident. Otherwise, she wouldn't have beaten Beyonce for that award.

Good job Kanye, 'spawning' her success and ruining your own. Keep talking about her, maybe by next year you can get her to be huge worldwide and get your label to drop you.
