If Applause vs Roar didnt happen...
how would things have gone?
would the ARTPOP album have been received better if Roar didn't come and debut at #1?
would it have been better if they both released at different times in the year?

It has nothing to do. Artpop was a bad album, even Lady Gaga admited it.
Prism was also pretty bad imo but the gp loves "generic" pop songs like Roar, Birthday, this is how we do etc...

This makes no sense. Applause is just as generic as Roar and it's not even a bad song, yet it still didn't smash?

ARTPOP would still be a terrible album. Applause would still never have hit #1 even if Roar didn't come out until February 2014 like originally planned. Nothing would have changed except Gaga & Katy wouldn't have been compared as much.
